What’s On My Desktop Today

Filed under: Random — Little Miss @ 11:32 am

When I’m sitting at my desk working, I have my laptop connected to a second monitor. I love having two monitors. I inherited my mom’s cool flat panel monitor since she got her screaming hot yellow Dell 17″ Inspiron laptop. She’d have no idea what to do with two monitors so I got the leftover. Happy to get leftovers, you know?

Anyhooo….. This is what I have on my desktop, which extends to my second monitor.

Copy of Hawaii 123

It’s great to look at that when just behind the monitor, out the window, is my beautiful tree view without snow but it’s all brown and gray. I move my eyes slightly to the right and through the 17″ monitor I envision myself back on that warm beach in Hawaii.

It also helps keep me going through the dry editing and rewriting of very technical documents.

  1. That beach looks positively sublime. LM, can you tell me the benefit of having two monitors? I know a few people who prefer this but I never remember to ask them why. I could do it, but I’m not sure how I’d use two.

  2. It comes in handy when I’m working in one document, but need to reference content in another document. I can place the referenced document in the second monitor and just glance over at it, rather than tabbing back and forth between windows. When I’m on my computer (working) I often have several programs open at once, and usually no less than four tabs open in my browser. I give multitasking a whole new definition. Or at least I think I do. Basically, you could put any program over on the other monitor. I think web developers use it for working out the kinks in the software itself, and then previewing the changes on the second monitor. Just guessing. Think of it as extending your desktop.

  3. We are supposed to get 6-8″ of snow tomorrow. We had ice and blizzard winds yesterday. The only thing I can say seeing your beach picture is….Sigh.

  4. @ Bev: I sigh too.

@ Wendy: I thought of another way to use the dual monitor. Work on one screen, play a movie on the other, or a TV show episode you missed (like CSI NY, which I’m watching right now while I’m working.)

  5. Ha! That’s so funny. I actually do that now. I work at my desk using my laptop for actual work, and next to me is my desktop computer for my fireplace screensaver, or a movie or music. If I had to go work in a real office I’d be screwed. I don’t think I could concentrate!

  6. Yup. Same thing, just working off of one CPU in my case. I just plug the second monitor into the side of my laptop. The last couple offices I worked in gave me two monitors. It just was the norm with the kind of work the group did, so I got one too. (They did web stuff, user experience stuff, and such.)
