Love / Hate Relationship

Filed under: Random — Little Miss @ 1:27 pm

As much as I love technology and all things computer and software, I absolutely hate cell phone technology. I have had a cell phone for years, having long since canceled a land-line phone. I love the convenience of a cell phone, specifically its portability and the security of having a phone with you at all times, especially in case of emergency.

However my current cell phone is crap. The part on the phone where you insert the charger adapter is broken and – silly me – I didn’t buy the insurance. So now I have to buy a new phone. I hate shopping for phones. Part of me would like the Blackberry kind where I can get my email any time, any place, just in case I don’t have my computer hooked up or Internet access. However, can we say EXPENSIVE? Nearly three hundred dollars for a friggin’ phone. Good grief.

Alternatively, if I get just a basic phone with camera in it, which is nice to have, I risk it breaking and it turning into crap in a year also. And then there’s the issue of reception. I think the phone companies have figured it out – build in crappy reception to the cheap phones and force people to buy the expensive phones.

And I absolutely have to have a phone – for conference calls for work, for my elderly mother to be able to reach me, for other family matters and potential emergencies.

So I’m venturing out into the world of cell phone shopping today. I really don’t want to do this.

And yes, I could get the Comcast home phone – I looked into that, and for reasons I won’t explain here, it’s not financially a smart move right now. I’d still need the cell phone anyway.

  1. I could rant on the subject of cell phones but I’ll spare you. Suffice it to say I agree with everything you said, and you said it so well.

  2. I got a 2nd hand one off ebay 2 years ago, and it’s still going strong. It was cheap enough that I didn’t worry about breaking it.

  3. cell phone shopping is almost as bad as car shopping….so many from which to choose, so much money for what your getting, and the “perfect” model will come out right after you buy yours.

i have a nokia n75 which is pretty good.

  4. I only learned how to text message about a year ago. I just got a phone with a QWERTY keyboard and I now am one speedy sucker! Anyway, I could live without the camera and all the fancy do-dads. I always get a phone from my provider on their 2-year upgrade plan so I don’t have to pay anything. I wouldn’t even know where to begin if I had to go to a store. My kids have to have those top of the line phones and I just don’t get it. I mean, just because you can have them doesn’t mean you need them…..right?

    Good luck!

  5. I empathize. It’s really weird, but I’m so phobic about technology that I can only read about it with one eye open.
