Home Decorating on No Budget

I have decided that if I wait for someone to help me paint my rooms and baseboards, I’ll be long past dead. And since I cannot afford to hire someone – these guys expect skilled labor rates for painting a friggin’ wall – I have decided to go ahead and set up my office with what I have now, instead of waiting for some far-off date when I’ll be able to get the right furniture, the right wall colors, sew the curtains with the fabric I already have, to put on curtain rods that I cannot hang myself. So it will be a hodge-podge of plastic folding tables, a leftover computer desk that is too high to be comfortable, an old dining table chair that hurts my back, and the monitor so high that I get a neck ache looking at it. People have made do with much less, I am certain.

But I have added comforts that make it semi-enjoyable. A candle in a pretty fragrance. A pretty $14 pink lamp that I bought on sale at Target the other day. Pale sage green storage boxes I bought over a year ago for my sewing room, and which look lovely in here. Plus, I’ve placed my computer station in front of the window that looks out into the neighborhood so I can spy on the neighbors as they come and go. It provides me a level of entertainment and distraction from the highly technical and obscure writing that I have to edit.

  1. I can certainly relate, especially with spying on the neighbors. 😉

Here’s a handy hint for your monitor. Get a sturdy cardboard box, and cut it down so that when your monitor sits on it, it’s at eye-level. You can reinforce it with duct-tape if you need to. Decorate it with a collage, or paint it or do something to make it prettier, put your monitor on top and voila! No more neck-ache.

  2. My neighbors here in suburbia aren’t nearly as entertaining as yours, Moonbeam, I’m sure. If there’s crack in use, it’s behind closed doors. Ok, that doesn’t sound right. I like the monitor support idea. I will certainly do that as soon as I get a flat table. I have this computer table my daughter got from a friend and it props the monitor up a good 8 inches off the desktop, and it’s not adjustable. I’ll have to take pictures.

  3. I think this is excellent. Every writer needs “a room of one’s own.” This one sounds serene and comfy, and nicely scented. 🙂

  4. oh sweetie….wish i could zip up there for a long weekend and paint your room. i’ve got loads of experience with paintbrushes. 🙂 good for you for trying to make the best of it. love the idea of peaking at the neighbors…. my sewing room use to be in the front part of the house…with a great view of the cul de sac. i miss being able to spy on everyone. 😉 the neighbors behind us are not nearly as entertaining.
