The Things I Do For Money

Filed under: Random — Little Miss @ 11:35 am

notebook I’ve totally f*d up my computer – well, not totally, and I didn’t do it, really. The big not-Apple software giant did. I have this pretty new computer that was running just perfectly on Windows Vista Home Premium, but Friday when I went onto their campus (that’s what they call it, and it’s appropriately named) to configure my computer to hook up to their corporate network, they said the operating system wouldn’t be compatible. Huh?

Ok, so, whatever. They wanted me to have Vista Enterprise on there and I figured, okay, fine, you’re giving me the software for free. They did, and more, and I have to say, everyone was really nice and very helpful while we did all this. I got Office 2007 (all programs possible) as well, for free, installed. However to get there was a pain in the ass to say the least. I had to backup my computer to an external hard drive, reformat the operating system, install Vista Enterprise, and then Office 2007, then configure everything so I could access their corporate mail through Outlook remotely, move my backup files back to my PC, delete them from the external hard drive, and then finally go home. At one point, I’d been on the phone with their helpdesk (in India) for two hours. The whole ordeal took me eight hours, and when I got home, I couldn’t connect to my wireless. I had to then go to the recovery portion of my computer and reinstall drivers and such so I could connect to my own home network. Finally, I’ve lost all my RSS feed links, all my email (I don’t know where they put it) and all my personal configurations.

The thing I noticed just now that ticks me off is that my video driver must be different now because when I playback a video I took yesterday of Cayden, it’s all jumpy, instead of the previously smooth playing video that I had before. Yikes.

The good news? My computer is now configured with all the stuff I need for business and to continue contract work with this company who loves using vendors for writing and editing. And I like the woman I’m doing work for, and the group, so hopefully it will be a nice long-term relationship. Time will tell.

  1. that’s why i cringe when Hubski tries to make my computer “better.” adding one thing invariably causes issues with 3 others that worked perfectly fine before. i had an opportunity to “upgrade” to Vista and politely declined. hope you get it all sorted out again. i hate computers when they don’t work properly. tho office ’07 has some nice features….

  2. I would have given up at Hour One.

I love my IT guy at work. If I had to do anything on my own, I’d be frantic. My home computer has the basics and I’m half afraid to install anything other than that. So, I mostly do internet surfing at work, but don’t tell! ha

Glad you are up and running at full speed!

  3. Teri – Vista is great, actually. I don’t have any issues with it nor with Office 07. Love that too. What was frustrating was more when I got home and found my wireless driver had been replaced – you know, all that snazzy stuff that comes preinstalled when you buy a new computer. Some of it I don’t miss, but I’ve had to spend time downloading new drivers, finding all my old mail and stuff.

Bev – I promise not to tell! I’m back up to full speed…and am glad to be working at a paying job too!

  5. @CuriousC – Ya, I would think so. It was a huge PITA. But at least I am getting paid now for my work. Hee hee.
